Cracked Heel Skin Management

Cracked heels, also known as heel fissures, can be uncomfortable and even painful. For most people they are just an aesthetic concern, but for people with underlying conditions such as Diabetes and circulatory issues, they can be a very serious concern.

Understanding Cracked Heels

Cracked heels are a prevalent foot condition characterised by the presence of dry, thickened skin and fissures (cracks) on the heels. These cracks can range from minor/shallow to severe/deep and may lead to discomfort, pain, bleeding, and infection if left untreated. Understanding the underlying causes of cracked heels is essential for effective management and include:

Poor Footcare

Not exfoliating, moisturising, or protecting your feet adequately can lead to the accumulation of dead skin and increased vulnerability to cracks.

Prolonged Standing or Walking

People who spend long hours standing or walking, especially on hard surfaces, may experience increased pressure on their heels. This pressure can lead to the development of cracks over time.

Medical Conditions

Certain medical conditions like diabetes, psoriasis, eczema, and thyroid disorders can contribute to dry and cracked skin, as they often disrupt the skin’s natural moisture balance.

Dehydration

Inadequate water intake can lead to dry skin, including on the heels. Hydration plays a vital role in maintaining skin elasticity and preventing cracks.

Dry Skin

When the skin on your heels lacks proper moisture, it becomes less elastic and more prone to cracking.

Improper Footwear

Wearing open-back or ill-fitting shoes can cause friction and pressure on the heels, leading to calluses and cracks.

Ageing

As we age, the skin’s ability to retain moisture diminishes, making older individuals more susceptible to cracked heels.

Climate and Seasonal Changes

Dry and cold weather conditions can strip the skin of its natural oils, causing it to become dry and prone to cracking.

Weight Gain

Excess weight puts additional pressure on the heels, leading to the development of cracks, particularly if weight gain is rapid.

Benefits of Professional Treatment

Our skilled podiatrists have in-depth knowledge of foot health and are equipped with the latest techniques and tools to manage cracked heels effectively. They also have products available to them that are not available in pharmacies. With professional treatment, you can expect quicker healing, reduced pain, minimised infection risks, and expert advice on proper foot care.

How to Prevent Cracked Heels

Preventing cracked heels is possible with proper care and attention. We focus on two techniques:

Exfoliation

Using a foot file or pumice stone, gently exfoliate the skin when it is dry, once or twice a week. Make sure not to take off too much skin. You don’t want the area to be red and raw when you are done. Rather exfoliate more often and less aggressively, than once in a while and take off all the layers of skin in one go.

Moisturising

Good foot creams have specific ingredients in them (urea, cetomacrogol). To begin with, choose any foot cream that appeals to you in the pharmacy. The key is consistent application, every day! If that cream is not helping, try another, and if that one still doesn’t help, then let us help you put a more personalised routine in place.
