Callus Management

Callus is the thickening of skin in response to excessive pressure over a relatively large surface area. It is a natural defense mechanism of the skin to protect underlying tissue from damage.

It can happen in many areas of the feet but is typically found under the balls of the feet, sides of baby toes and the top of hammer/curled toes. Callus is typically not painful, but it can be uncomfortable if it is very thick. Sometimes, if the pressure is there for long enough or the pressure is focal enough, callus can develop into corns. And those are typically painful.

What is Callus Management?

Callus management refers to the process of treating and caring for calluses. Proper callus management involves a combination of preventative measures and treatment techniques to keep calluses from becoming painful or causing complications. Key aspects of callus management include preventative measures such as correctly fitting footwear and keeping the skin adequately moisturised, homecare methods such as using a pumice stone to gently exfoliate the skin once a week, and/or seeking medical help from a Podiatrist, particularly if the callus is causing discomfort.

Podiatrists use special tools to thin down the thick skin. We may also prescribe particular creams and ointments but most importantly we will address what is causing the excessive pressure.

The Importance of Professional Callus Care

Remember that while calluses are generally harmless, improper management can lead to complications such as infections, ulcers, or other skin issues. Using things at home such as razor blades, scrapers and box cutters is unsafe. Those tools are not sterile and if you cut yourself, you run the risk of infection. This is particularly important for people living with Diabetes who are already at risk of complications and infections.

If you’re unsure about how to manage callus or if it’s causing you significant discomfort, it’s best to seek guidance from a podiatrist.

Our Callus Management Process

  • Consultation to explore where your calluses are, how long they have been there, why they are bothering you and what you’d like to have done.
  • Examination to see the location, extent and severity of the callus formation
  • Assessment of the risk factors or things that are contributing towards the formation of the callus.
  • Footwear assessment – appropriateness and sizing.
  • Treatment of the callus – gently and painlessly shaving down with a scalpel blade.
  • Applying and advising on moisturisers and homecare methods.
  • Addressing the risk factors.
  • Booking a follow up to monitor progress

FAQs on Callus Removal by Podiatrist

Q: Is it safe to remove calluses at home using over-the-counter treatments?

A: While it is generally safe to remove calluses at home using over-the-counter treatments like creams with urea or salicylic acid and gentle filing tools like pumice stones, it’s important to exercise caution. Avoid using sharp objects to cut or scrape the callus, as this can lead to cuts, infections, and other complications. If you have diabetes or poor circulation, it’s recommended to consult a podiatrist before attempting any form of callus removal at home.

Q: How can I prevent calluses from forming in the first place?

A: Preventing calluses involves reducing friction and pressure on the skin by choosing well-fitting shoes that provide cushioning and support and avoiding shoes that are tight, pointy and hard. Regular moisturising of the skin with a good foot cream is also beneficial to keep the skin supple.

Q: When should I see a doctor for callus treatment?

A: It’s a good idea to see a podiatrist if the callus is causing pain or discomfort, if you have tried over the counter treatments and home remedies without success, if there is any redness, swelling or discharge. If you have Diabetes, it is important to seek the help of a podiatrist as soon as you are aware of any thickening of skin, regardless of discolouration or pain.
