Custom Foot Orthoses Information

AKA: Orthotics / Insoles

foot wart removal by podiatrist johannesburg

Custom foot orthoses have been used in the medical profession for over 150 years for the treatment of various conditions of the foot and lower limb. They have evolved from leather and metal to moldable thermoplastics into the digital age of CAD/CAM methods such as milling and 3D printing.

“An in-shoe medical device which is designed to alter the magnitudes and temporal pattern of the reaction forces acting on the plantar aspect of the foot in order to allow more normal foot and lower extremity functioning and to decrease pathologic loading forces on the structural components of the foot and lower extremity during weight bearing activities.” (Kirby 2014)

There is a lot of research around orthoses with mixed results, often due to flawed methodology. There are numerous research studies that have provided solid validation of the therapeutic effectiveness of orthoses in both the athletic and non-athletic population. The success rate of treating various foot and lower limb injuries has been reported as being between 50-90%. Which means there is no guarantee that they may work.

Fitting your new orthoses

Please note, that that we do a fitting and not an over the counter dispensal. It is an appointment to make sure they fit, make any immediate adjustments, sometimes complete them and explain the next steps.

It takes time to get the orthoses to fit perfectly in your shoes and adjustments may be necessary. There is a possibility that you may not go home with your orthoses on the first fitting.

Please ensure you bring the appropriate shoes to your fitting, as discussed in your consultation.
