Ingrowing Toenail Surgical Treatment / Removal
If you’ve been struggling with persistent discomfort from an ingrown toenail, our surgical approach is designed to provide lasting relief. Read on to explore the benefits of opting for surgical treatment and discover the seamless process that awaits you.
Why Opt for Surgical Treatment?
- Permanent Solution: Surgical removal provides a permanent solution to recurrent ingrown toenails, addressing the root cause and preventing future occurrences.
- Effective and Swift: Surgical procedures efficiently eliminate ingrown toenails, offering a quicker resolution compared to repeated conservative methods.
- Local Anesthesia: Experience the procedure comfortably with the application of local anesthesia, ensuring you’re pain-free during the surgery.
- Precision: Surgical removal allows for precise removal of offending section of the ingrown toenail, promoting proper healing and reducing the likelihood of complications.
- In-Rooms Procedure: The procedure is done in our rooms and does not require a hospital theatre. Bedside Sedation is reserved for high risk or complicated cases.
The Surgical Process for Ingrown Toenails
Our surgical process involves a series of well-defined steps to ensure a seamless experience:
- Assessment: Our podiatrists will assess the extent of the ingrown toenail and discuss the procedure with you.
- Local Anaesthesia: Before the surgery begins, local anesthesia is administered to numb the affected toe, which is a few seconds
- Surgical Removal: The side of the ingrown toenail is carefully removed. We then use Phenol to do a chemical burn of the germinal cells of the nail, creating a permanent result.
- Wound Care: The treated area is cleaned and dressed to facilitate optimal healing and prevent infection.
- Post-Operative Guidance: Our team provides comprehensive instructions for post-surgery care to promote a smooth recovery

FAQs on Surgical Toenail Removal
Q: Is surgical toenail removal painful?
A: The administration of the local anaestheric, by injection, is a little uncomfortable, but generally it is not worse than the pain of the ingrown toenail. Once the toe is numb, you will be able to feel movement and pressure, but no pain.
Q: Are there risks associated with surgical toenail removal?
A: The biggest risk is infection. This happens most often after the procedure when the homecare protocol is not adhered to. While complications during the procedure are rare, our experienced podiatrists take every precaution to minimize risks and ensure a successful outcome. Risks will be discussed in the consultation before your procedure appointment.
Q: How long does the recovery take?
A: The recovery period varies. The average healing time is 6-8 weeks to full recovery.
